Ears – Otoplasty

Ear operations or Otoplasty are operations to correct the deformities of the ears.  The most common ear deformities are protruding ears and constricted ears.  Cryptotia and microtia are other common deformities.

Sometimes the outer ear is more separated from the head than normal. There is normally an auricular shell which lacks shape in the crease of the ear, the antehelix, which is the crease just in front of the edge of the ear.

This surgery is common with children who enter school and are bullied, making them self conscious.  This is common with children around 6 or 7 years old.

Anesthesia

In most ear operations (Otoplasty), local anesthesia with light sedation is used.  This is the type of anesthesia that I prefer for teenagers and adults.

Local anesthesia with deeper sedation can also be used, supervised by an anesthetist, or with general anesthesia.  This type of anesthesia is generally recommended for children.

With local anesthesia, you will be calm and you won’t feel any pain.  With general anesthesia, you will be completely asleep for the entire procedure.

In either case, the most suitable method will be recommended.

Surgical Process

To bring the ears closer to the head, we remove a small strip of skin from behind the ears.  The scar will be completely hidden.

We mark where we want to bend the ear and we debilitate the cartilage to be able to bend the ear.

The outer crease of the ear, the antihelix, is created by folding the cartilage with a few stitches.

Above all, we try to obtain the most natural looking result possible.

Pre-Operation

In the moment that you make your first visit, we will study the details of your ears and tell you everything about surgical possibilities, techniques, scar sites, etc…

If I believe that other complementing operations can be done at the same time, with the idea of improving your aesthetic appearance, I will let you know.

Surgical Time

You should know that one thing is surgical time and another thing is the real amount of time from when you arrive to when you leave.

Surgical time for ear operations (otoplasty) is approximately 1 ½ hours, and the real time could be 30 or 45 minutes more.

Post-Operation

After the operation you will have a bandage to protect the ears for one week.  Sometimes it is necessary to wear a rubber band for two or three weeks to maintain the shape and protect the ears.
