Eyelids – Bags – Blefaroplasty

Aesthetic Eyelid Surgery (Blefaroplasty), is an operation aimed at eliminating the fat bags and excess skin in moderate quantities from both eyelids.  This procedure does not correct the  “Chicken’s Feet” wrinkles which spread out from the outer sides of the eyes.

Although you may have received information about facial aesthetic surgery in general, there are some specific aspects of the eyelids which should be mentioned.

Changes in the skin due to aging affect, among other structures, the eyelids in the following way:

  • The skin falls from the upper eyelids over a natural crease, above all on the outside of the eye.  Sometimes the crease is visible and sometimes no.
  • It gives the patient a sad look due to the creasing in the eyelids.
  • Relaxation of the skin under the eye, with visible wrinkles.
  • Bags under the eyes.  They can appear in young people, it isn’t necessarily a sign of aging.
  • The double bag effect.  This is hereditary and also not related to aging.

These changes don’t have anything to do with swelling in the eyelids; this could be related to other factors such as allergies, general illnesses, or intermittent edema from hormonal influx in women and menstrual cycle.

Anesthesia for Eyelid Surgery

Personally, for Blepharoplasties, I prefer local anesthesia with sedation.  You will be calm and you won’t feel any pain, but this surgery can also be done with general anesthesia.

Pre-Operation in Blepharoplasties

Before the surgery (Blepharoplasty) you should divulge, if you know, the changes in your tears or eyes which have appeared, to see if some previous treatment is necessary.  If the surgery is done with local anesthesia it is carried out in the operating room in our office.  If general anesthesia is needed, the surgery is done in an operating room in the clinic.

Surgical Time for Eyelid Surgeries

You should know that one thing is operating time and another is real time from when you enter the office until when you leave.  The operating time in Blepharoplasties is approximately 1 or 2 hours.  The real time can be 30 or 45 minutes more.

Post-Operation for Blepharoplasties

We will give you some post-operation rules for short and long term, which will specify how to care for it and exercises that you must do.

In Blepharoplasties, we normally don’t use dressings.  For 2-3 days you can apply cold packs with saline or boiled chamomile, or make use of some cold glasses.

Normally the stitches are taken out during the first week, seven or eight days after the operation.

General makeup can be applied between the first and second week, depending on the case.  We recommend oils or creams with lots of fat to eliminate makeup.

The reincorporation of normal day to day activities depends on the speed of recovery of each case and the how the patient feels after the operation.  Remember that the final result of the operation isn’t obtained until at least three months have passed.  However, starting in the second week you can live a normal life, covering the scars with makeup.  You should avoid harder activities like sports, house cleaning, etc. for one month after a Blepharoplasty operation.

It can be said about the results that the elimination of bags under the eyes is practically permanent, but as the aging process continues, the skin and muscles continue to relax and lose their natural tone.  In some occasions, after several years, a small correction of excess skin could be advisable.

Possible Complications

Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) is a very systematized surgery.  There is a lot of experience with it due to the great number of surgeries carried out but you should be aware of the possible complications.

  • Complications can arise in any kind of surgery, however if they appear they are not painful and are easily controllable.
  • Excessive tearing, sensitivity to intense light, and small pulls in the scars can appear for short periods of time.
  • In cases of unfavorable scars, small bumps or hyperpigmentations can sometimes appear in some areas.  These cases are very rare, easily predictable, and easily concealed..
