Sclerosis – Varicose Veins – MicrofoamWHAT ARE VARICOSE VEINS? Varicose veins are dilations which are produced in the veins when the valves cease to function correctly. WHY DO WE GET THEM? There are multiple causes but especially: being sedentary, hormonal factors, posture habits, types of food, and genetics. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS? Tiredness, tingling, swelling, stinging, pain, and later, phlebitis, ulcers, and thrombosis. HOW IS IT DIAGNOSED? A clinical visit is required. A Doppler-Ecography will help to reveal fundamental information and help us to decide which treatment to use. DO THEY HAVE TO BE TREATED? Varicose veins do not disappear alone over time, they have to be treated. If not, they continue to grow in size and number due to the complications they cause. WHAT TREATMENTS ARE THERE? Nowadays, most varicose veins can be treated as an out patient procedure, without surgery, without anesthesia, and with minimal discomfort to the patient thanks to chemical sclerosis, criosclerosis, vascular lasers, and microfoam injections in the larger veins. Patients normally return to their normal activities immediately. Pharmacological support, a great help, can relieve symptoms but doesn’t stop the formation of new varicose veins, nor can it eliminate those which already exist. Each case must be individually evaluated by a doctor to decide which type of treatment is best and how many sessions are necessary. ARE THE RESULTS GOOD? The results depend on the patient. In general, the varicose veins which are treated disappear in a few sessions, with great satisfaction to the patients. A revision is scheduled for at least once a year. In some cases, hyperpigmented stains can appear on the skin, which normally disappear with the use of some topical cream for a short time. |
